Abstract

The evangelizing activities justified the dissemination, circulation, and consumption of grape wine in various parts of the globe during the early modern era. In this sense, the Paraguayan region was no exception and experienced a widespread distribution of this type of product through religious agents. In fact, these lands were a wine-producing area for much of the 17th century. However, during the following century, the production of «local» wine declined in the face of the increase in other products (possibly more profitable and less labor-intensive) such as yerba mate, tobacco, and sugar. Therefore, we will establish the channels of introduction and distribution of wine in Paraguayan lands between the 16th and 18th centuries, distinguishing its origin (European or «de la tierra») and who its main agents were, paying special attention to the members of the Society of Jesus.
